When Should Seniors Schedule Their Pictures?

If you are a senior (or the parent of one), you have probably started hearing about senior pictures and wondering when you are supposed to take them. Is summer too early? Is fall too late? What about the yearbook?

The short answer: most seniors take their pictures in the summer or early fall of senior year. But the best time for your senior pictures really depends on the look you want, your schedule and a few important deadlines. Here is how I help Cedar Valley seniors pick the perfect time.

The Best Seasons for Senior Pictures in Iowa

Summer (June through August)

Summer is the most popular time for senior pictures, and for good reason. Everything is green and lush, the evenings are long and your schedule is usually a little more open before school, sports and activities ramp up. Taking your senior pictures in the summer also means your photos are ready well before any fall deadlines.

Good to know: Iowa summers can be hot and humid, so I schedule summer sessions in the evening when it is cooler and the light is softer.

Fall (September through early November)

Fall senior pictures are stunning. Golden fields, warm sunsets and colorful leaves make for a beautiful, cozy gallery. In northeast Iowa the leaves usually peak around early to mid October, depending on the year.

Good to know: Fall is the busiest season of the year for photographers, and golden hour dates in October book up quickly. If you have your heart set on fall colors, reach out in the summer to save your spot.

Winter (December through February)

Winter sessions are less common, but a fresh snowfall can make for some of the most unique senior pictures you will ever see. Think cozy sweaters, beanies and soft white backdrops. Winter is also a great option for seniors who were too busy with fall sports to fit a session in.

Spring (March through May)

Spring brings blooming trees and that fresh green look. It is a perfect time for a cap and gown session right before graduation. My Spring Cap and Gown Mini is $150 and can be added to any senior session, or booked on its own if you already have your senior pictures.

Plan Around Your Deadlines

Before you pick a date, check the deadlines that matter to you:

  • Yearbook. Many schools have a yearbook deadline in the fall or early winter. Ask your school for the exact date and any photo requirements, like size or orientation.
  • Graduation announcements. Most families mail announcements in April or May, so you will want your photos ready to design and print by early spring.
  • Graduation party. Photos for party signs, displays and invitations should be ready a few months ahead.
  • Sports and activities. If you want photos in your uniform or with your instrument, plan around your season so you are not squeezing a session into a crazy week.

How Far Ahead Should You Book?

I recommend booking your senior session about two to three months ahead of the date you want. For fall dates, earlier is even better. Booking ahead gives us time to plan your locations, outfits and any props that tell your story, so session day feels easy and fun.

Didn’t plan ahead? Don’t worry! Please don’t assume it is too late. Life gets busy, and plans change. Last-minute openings do come up, so send me a message to see what I have available and I will do my best to find a time that works for you. You might be surprised how quickly we can get you in.

Booking is simple. A $100 non-refundable retainer reserves your date, and the remaining balance is due on or before your session day.

Morning or Evening?

Most of my senior sessions happen during golden hour, which is about an hour before sunset. The light is soft, warm and flattering on everyone. Early morning light can be beautiful too, especially on hot summer days. I will help you choose the time of day that works best for your location and season.

My Recommendation

If you want the most options and the least stress, plan to take your senior pictures the summer before or the early fall of your senior year. You will have plenty of time for yearbook deadlines, graduation announcements and party planning. Then add a quick cap and gown mini in the spring for a fun way to wrap up the year.
