Best Places for Senior Pictures in Cedar Falls and Waterloo

Senior pictures in downtown Cedar Falls, Iowa against a green painted brick wall.

One of the first questions I get from seniors and their parents is, "Where should we take my senior pictures?" It is a great question, because the location sets the whole mood of your gallery. A golden field feels warm and relaxed. A brick downtown street feels polished and a little bit trendy. A wooded trail feels peaceful and classic.

After 14 years of photographing seniors across the Cedar Valley, I have a pretty good feel for which spots shine at which time of year. Here are some of the best places for senior pictures in Cedar Falls and Waterloo, plus a few tips for choosing the one that feels most like you.

Downtown Cedar Falls

If you love a clean, city feel, downtown Cedar Falls is hard to beat. Main Street has historic brick buildings, fun storefronts and plenty of texture for a variety of looks in one short walk. It is perfect for a dressed up outfit or a casual jeans and jacket look.

Best for: Seniors who want something modern and stylish. Best time: Early evening, when the buildings block harsh sun and the light gets soft.

George Wyth State Park

George Wyth sits right between Cedar Falls and Waterloo and gives us lakes, trees and trails all in one place. It is one of my go to spots for a natural setting because we can move from open water to shady woods without driving anywhere.

Best for: Seniors who love the outdoors or want a few very different backdrops in one session. Best time: Golden hour, about an hour before sunset.

Hartman Reserve Nature Center

Hartman Reserve in Cedar Falls is full of wooded trails, open grassy areas and wooden bridges. In the fall the trees turn gorgeous shades of gold and orange, which makes it a favorite for October senior sessions.

Best for: A classic, earthy look and fall colors. Best time: Late afternoon into golden hour.

Big Woods Lake

Big Woods Lake in Cedar Falls offers lake views, walking paths and lots of open sky. It is a beautiful choice for seniors who want that glowy, backlit look with water in the background.

Best for: Soft, dreamy sunset photos. Best time: The last hour before sunset.

Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens

The Arboretum in Waterloo has beautifully kept gardens that change through the seasons. Spring and summer blooms make it a great pick for colorful, garden style senior pictures.

Best for: Seniors who love flowers and color. Good to know: The Arboretum charges an entrance fee, so I will let you know about any costs ahead of time.

University of Northern Iowa Campus

The UNI campus in Cedar Falls has brick buildings, big trees and wide walkways that give senior pictures a collegiate feel. It is a fun choice if you are headed to UNI after graduation or just love that campus look.

Best for: A polished, timeless setting. Best time: Weekends or evenings, when campus is quieter.

Downtown Waterloo and the Cedar River

Downtown Waterloo has a great mix of architecture, bridges and river views. The riverfront gives us water and city in the same frame, which makes for a really unique set of images.

Best for: Seniors who want an urban look with a little nature mixed in.

A Place That Means Something to You

Some of my favorite senior sessions happen somewhere that tells your story. Your family farm, the ball field where you spent every summer, the barn where you keep your horse or even your own backyard. If a place matters to you, it will show in your photos.

Think a cornfield on the family farm in the fall, or the pond where you have spent every summer. These spots make for senior pictures nobody else will have.

How to Choose the Right Senior Picture Location

  • Think about your style. Do you feel more like a downtown, coffee shop person or a fields and fresh air person?
  • Match your outfits. Dressy looks pop against brick and city streets. Flannels, knits and boots look amazing in fields and woods.
  • Consider the season. Fall leaves, spring blooms and summer greenery all give a different feel.
  • Pick two if you can. My Ultimate Senior Experience includes up to two locations, so you can get a city look and a nature look in one session.

Not sure where to start? That is what I am here for. When you book, I help you plan the location, timing and outfits so you can relax and enjoy your session. Some locations have their own photography rules or fees, and I take care of those details ahead of time.
